The Long Dark
The final light closes
Silence falls over the land
The birds have all flown away
The trees are shaved
and somewhere down the road
A lonely window turns black
The cold comes quietlyit does not knock
It settles into the walls
Beneath the doors
Between the sheets
Where warmth once lived
I have forgotten the sound of morning
The Sun still rises somplace
I suppose,
But it does not pass by here anymore.
The fields lay empty under the mud
The roads become footsteps
The houses are silent
The people inside are afraid to wake
How heavy the nightmare becomes
It presses agaisnt the lungs
Fills them with goo
It maakes the smallest thing
Impossible to carry
A voice in the fog
Laughter in a fire
A familiar shadow waits by the door
I would give anyting to hear them again
For them to disturb the silence
To hear a floorboard crea under their step
A kettle sings
A voice from another oom
Anything
But the dark is gentle in its cruelty
It doesn't show me what I lost
It only leave the empty space
And asks me to sit besides it
So I sit beath the dying stars
Holding what cinders of warmth remain
And speak softly into the Long Dark
With vapor escaping my mouth
I hope you are somewhere beautiful
I hope there are shelves to climb and rest on
I hope the pain in your feet is gone
Bright windows cills that overlook the mountains
Where nothing you love ever have to leave
The final light has closed
The land is still
And I am here
Loving you,
Waiting for you,
In the Long Dark
